Thursday 2nd September
Drove into the town of Donauworth and parked in the first carpark we came too - probably not one meant for big vehicles, but we couldn't believe how cheap it was - 30c for 5 hours and 50c for 10 hours! We only stayed for 2, with a walk through parkland to the town centre where we quickly looked for the Rathaus, because at 11am a Glockenspiel rings out with several pretty tunes - we got there just in time, then soaked up the atmosphere on the island of Ried, sat beside the confluence of the Rivers Wornitz and Donau (Danube) - the latter very fast-flowing after recent rain, saw the huge ancient Monastery and the storks nesting on one of its chimneys and finally, a walk along the Reichsstrasse, the very wide main street. All the towns we have visited have had several fountains, mostly fairly old, but here they had a small modern one that we think maybe was modelled on those found in Horsham(!?)
We were then feeling a strong urge to get to the lakes and mountains, so got back onto the B2 and missing out Augsburg, came across country to Ammersee, finding a pleasant little campsite beside the lake near Diessen. We spent the rest of the afternoon basking in the sunshine, watching the sailing boats and the occasional steamer passing by. Something worth a mention from the drive south is the field after field we passed of sweetcorn and solar panels! Must have been thousands of the latter, all lined up like they were the local crop.
Friday 3rd September
Took a little while for the sun to warm up this morning, but we cycled the short distance to Diessen and as we ate our lunch on the lake-side we began to feel the heat again. Lunch was different today - usually we have had no trouble filling in the form for the rolls we would like delivered in the morning (all the sites seem to do this) but today when we opened our bag we found 4 pretzels! Not easy to put a filling in these, but they were rather good with a chunk of cheese! We managed to fend off all the ducks, geese, swans and lots of white birds (not sure what they are) while we ate. Thought of going for a trip on the paddle steamer, but having read in the guidebook that if you are staying in the largest town by the lake, Herrsching, it is worth a visit to the other side - and we are on that other side so we stayed where we were! We climbed the hill to the huge church on top but we couldn't go in because of renovations going on. A dear little black and white kitten came and made friends with us and sat with us on the seat.
Ditto yesterday afternoon basking .....
Although this campsite is quite small, it has a rather super restaurant (also open to the public). We have dined there this evening, sitting on the enclosed terrace, looking out onto the lake watching the late sunshine on the boats. A chap and his daughter at the next table helped us with the menu and recommended today's fish fresh from the lake. I had this - called Renke and quite like trout. They also ordered our sweets for us(!) and we shared a kind of apple pancake with chocolate sauce and apfelstrudel with wonderful ice cream. (Can't do that too often.)
No wifi here, so hope to put this on the blog tomorrow.
